How do I draw planets so they look round?
The shading has to curve with the surface, not sit in a straight band. Ask for tone that follows the curve of the disc and for a terminator, the soft line between lit and unlit sides, placed off centre rather than down the middle.
How do I draw the planets in the right order and size?
Say you want them in order from the sun at relative sizes. Ask for a thin baseline under the row so the eye can compare them, and keep every disc the same stroke weight so size does the talking.
How do I draw rings around a planet?
Rings are ellipses, and part of the ellipse passes in front of the planet while the rest goes behind. Say that explicitly, and ask for the ring shadow to fall on the disc, which is what makes the two shapes lock together.
How do I draw craters?
A crater is a rim, an inner wall and a floor. Light one side of the rim and shade the opposite inner wall, and keep all the shadows pointing the same way. Overlapping older craters with newer ones makes the surface believable.
What background works for a planets drawing?
A diagram reads best on white paper. A tonal study reads best on a dark ground with the stars left as untouched specks rather than drawn dots, which keeps them from competing with the disc.
Can I make a matching set for a science project?
