How do I draw a sword blade that is actually symmetrical?
Draw the centreline first and treat it as the spine of the whole weapon, then measure both edges out from it at the same points down the length. The groove or fuller runs on that same line. Most swords that look wrong are not badly shaded, they are just wider on one side than the other.
How do I make the blade look like metal?
Steel is not grey all over. It reflects a dark band and a bright band in adjacent strips running the length of the blade, with a hard edge between them rather than a soft blend. Keep the very edge as bare paper and let the flat carry most of the tone.
How do I draw a sword pointing toward the viewer?
The blade compresses dramatically, so draw the crossguard first at its full width and then decide how much length is left for the blade, which may be only a fraction of what it would be side on. Keep the guard and pommel in correct proportion, since they are what tells the eye it is a sword at all.
How do I design a hilt that looks coherent?
Treat it as four parts stacked along the tang: pommel, grip, guard and the shoulder of the blade. Give them one shared design language, so if the pommel is faceted the guard ends should be faceted too. Ornament that only appears on one part reads as an accident.
How do I get a plain background or a tighter crop?
Ask for a flat white background with no setting behind the sword, then crop on the Canvas to the frame you want. A clean silhouette is worth having here, because sword drawings usually end up placed into a character sheet, a game asset layout or a print rather than standing alone.
Can I keep a set of sword drawings in one style?
Use Style Transfer. Lock the look of your first blade, then apply it as you generate each additional weapon so the line weight, metal treatment and level of ornament stay the same. That is what makes a weapon rack or an armoury sheet read as a single designed set.
