What is the simplest way to start drawing an ear?
Block it as a tilted oval, wider at the top than the bottom, then draw the outer rim as a question mark running from the top edge down to the lobe. The inner fold is a second smaller curve nested inside it. Almost every ear is those two curves plus a bowl, and the individual variation sits in how far each one turns.
Where does the ear sit on the head?
In a straight profile the top of the ear lines up roughly with the brow and the bottom with the base of the nose, and it sits behind the halfway line of the skull. It also tilts backward, following the angle of the jaw, rather than standing vertical. Misplacing it forward is the most common head-drawing error.
How do I shade an ear so it looks three dimensional?
Treat the bowl as a shallow cup. The deepest shadow sits inside it just behind the rim, the lit edge runs along the top of the outer rim, and the lobe is the softest, roundest value in the whole form. Once that light-rim-dark-bowl relationship is set, the smaller folds only need a hint of tone.
Why do my ears look flat and pasted on?
Usually because the ear is drawn as a flat shape on the side of the head instead of a form standing off it. Add a small shadow where the ear meets the skull and let the upper rim curl forward, and the ear immediately reads as attached rather than stuck on.
How do I isolate the ear or reframe the study?
Ask for a flat white background with no head around the ear, then crop it on the Canvas to the frame you need. That is useful if you are building a practice sheet or a reference set where the same crop has to repeat across several drawings.
Can I keep a set of anatomy studies in one consistent style?
