How do I draw a forest so it has depth?
Change the line weight and the detail by distance, not just the size. Front trunks get full bark texture and your heaviest line, the middle rank gets a plain outline, and the back rank becomes a pale vertical mark with no detail at all. Three clearly separated layers read as depth better than a dozen evenly drawn ones.
How do I draw a lot of trees without drawing every leaf?
Draw the canopy as a mass with a broken outer edge, then only describe leaf clusters where light hits the mass or where the sky cuts into it. Inside the shadowed part of the canopy, leave it as tone. Drawing individual leaves throughout flattens the whole shape.
How do I space the trunks so it looks natural?
Vary the gaps and never repeat the same interval twice. Real stands cluster, with two or three trunks close together and then a wide opening. Also vary the lean, since perfectly vertical trunks in a row read as a fence rather than a wood.
How do I draw light coming through the trees?
Work the surrounding area dark first, then lift or leave the light shafts. The beams are straight-edged, all parallel, and they should catch only a few things on the way down: a trunk edge, some haze, a patch of floor. Adding light onto an already light drawing rarely works.
How do I crop a forest scene or clear the background?
Ask for a flat white sky with no background elements behind the tree line, then crop it on the Canvas to the frame you need. That is useful if the drawing is becoming a banner, a book plate or one panel in a set where the aspect ratio is fixed later.
Can I keep a set of landscape drawings in one style?
Use Style Transfer. Lock the look of the first drawing, then apply it as you generate each scene so the line weight, the foliage treatment and the tonal range stay matched across the set. That is what lets several separate woodland views read as one body of work.
