Häufig gestellte Fragen

What makes a butterfly drawing read as a monarch?
The pattern, not the shape. Heavy black veins divide the orange into panels like stained glass, the wing borders are solid black, and two rows of small white dots run along the outer margin and the body. Name those three and the species is unmistakable.
How do I draw the monarch vein pattern?
Draw the veins as a branching structure radiating from the wing base, not as a grid. They get thinner toward the outer edge and never cross each other. Fill the orange between them afterwards so the veins sit on top of the colour.
How do I draw a butterfly symmetrically?
Draw one side well, then mirror it. Ask for a symmetrical specimen layout with a clear central body axis, which is how entomological plates are set out. On the Canvas you can nudge the halves until the match is exact.
How do I tell a monarch from a viceroy in a drawing?
A viceroy has an extra black line arcing across the hindwing, cutting through the vein pattern. If you want a monarch, say the hindwing has no crossing black band, and the two species stop being confusable.
How do I draw a monarch at rest?
At rest the wings close above the back and only the paler underside shows, which is muted orange with the same vein cage but softer contrast. Ask for the closed-wing side view with the legs gripping a stem.
Can I keep a set of butterfly drawings in one style?
Use Style Transfer. Lock the look of your first monarch, then apply it while you generate other species so the line weight, vein treatment and palette stay consistent across the whole set.
