How do I draw Saturn rings in the right perspective?
Draw the rings as one flat ellipse first, before the planet. The near arc crosses in front of the globe and the far arc disappears behind it, so the ellipse is never a closed shape once the planet is in. Keep the same tilt on the inner and outer edges, since they lie in the same plane.
Why do my rings look like they are stuck on top of the planet?
Almost always because the far arc has been drawn across the globe instead of behind it. Break that line where it meets the planet edge and pick it up again on the other side. A shadow cast by the rings onto the globe fixes the rest.
How do I draw the cloud bands?
Keep them as soft horizontal stripes that curve with the sphere, widest at the middle and compressing toward the poles. Vary the width so no two bands match, and avoid hard edges between them. The bands are the main thing that stops the globe reading as a plain circle.
Where does a ring shadow fall?
On the side of the globe away from the light, as a narrow dark band that follows the plane of the rings rather than the curve of the planet. The planet also casts a shadow back onto the rings on that same side, which cuts a wedge out of that arc.
How do I get a plain background instead of a star field?
Ask for a flat white paper background with no stars or space behind the planet, then crop it on the Canvas. That keeps the outer silhouette clean enough for a worksheet, a diagram or a print, and you can always add a field of stars later as a separate layer.
Can I keep a whole set of planet drawings in one style?
Use Style Transfer. Lock the look of the first drawing, then apply it as you generate each planet so the line weight, the banding treatment and the palette stay consistent. Keep the light coming from the same side across the set, otherwise the row will not read as one system.
