What proportions make a drawing read as a baby rather than a small adult?
The head is roughly a quarter of the total height, against about an eighth in an adult. The eyes sit below the halfway line of the head, the nose and chin are short, and the forehead takes up far more of the face than you expect. Get those three relationships right and the figure reads as an infant before you draw anything else.
How do I draw baby features without making them look harsh?
Avoid hard outlines on the face. Infant features are soft transitions rather than edges, so build the nose and the lips with tone that fades at both ends and keep any line you do use very light. Reserve your darkest marks for the lash line and the shadow under the chin.
How do I draw a baby in a simple line style?
Reduce the figure to the silhouette and two or three interior marks. A curled sleeping pose works best for this because the whole body becomes one rounded shape. Ask for a single continuous contour and no shading, and let the outline carry all of the character.
How do I draw small hands and feet?
Draw the whole mitt shape first, then divide it. Infant fingers are short, similar in length to each other, and the creases sit at the knuckle rather than along the joints. The dimples where an adult would have knuckle bones are what sell the age.
How do I get a plain background or a tighter crop?
Ask for a flat white background with no room around the figure, then crop it on the Canvas to the frame you need. That keeps the silhouette clean if the drawing is going into a card, a birth announcement or a nursery print where the layout comes later.
