How do you draw a crystal so it looks transparent?
Let the facets disagree. In a transparent stone each plane shows a different value, some lighter than the background and some darker, with hard edges between. Smooth shading across the whole stone makes it look like coloured plastic.
How do I plan the facets?
Draw the outer silhouette first as a simple prism, then run the facet lines from each corner of the base toward the tip. Every facet line should end on another line or on the outline, never stop in mid air.
How do I draw a crystal cluster?
Vary the height and the angle of each point, and let a few of them overlap so the shorter crystals are partly hidden. A cluster of matching parallel points reads as a diagram rather than a mineral.
How do I colour a crystal drawing?
Keep the colour deepest at the base and let it thin out toward the tip, and shift the hue slightly between neighbouring facets. One flat colour across the whole stone removes all the depth the facets created.
How do I draw the fractures inside a crystal?
Draw them as thin feathered planes that catch light, not as cracks on the surface. Keep them in the middle of the stone with clear glass around them, and stipple works better than line because it keeps the edges soft.
Can I get a crystal drawing on a plain background?
Yes. Ask for a plain white background with no surface and no cast shadow, then tidy the edges on the Canvas. That gives you a clean shape for a tattoo reference, a logo study or a printed card.
