Questions fréquentes

How do I draw a gavel step by step?
Draw the head first as a cylinder lying on its side, then run the handle out of its middle at a right angle. Add the collar where the two meet and the sounding block underneath, and the proportions hold.
Why does my gavel head look flat?
Because the hatching runs along it instead of around it. Ask for curved hatch lines wrapping the cylinder, a bright edge on the lit side and a dark band on the other, with an ellipse rather than a straight line at the face.
What is the round block under the gavel called?
The sounding block. It is a separate disc or short cylinder of hardwood that the gavel strikes, and including it is what makes the drawing read as a gavel rather than a mallet.
How do I draw the wood grain?
Grain follows the shape: long lines running with the handle, tight rings on the end face of the head. Ask for a few dark grain lines rather than an even pattern, and leave the lit side mostly clear.
Can I get a gavel mark for a logo or a heading?
Ask for a flat outline in one even stroke over a plain block shape, no grain and no shading, on flat white. Crop it on the Canvas and it stays readable at small sizes in a header or a badge.
Which medium suits a gavel drawing best?
Graphite handles the turned form well, stipple gives the most control over end grain, coloured pencil carries warm hardwood colour, and a flat outline is the right choice for anything going into a layout.
