How do I draw a leaf that looks believable?
Draw the midrib first, as a curve rather than a straight axis, because the leaf twists along it. Build the two halves off that line and let them differ slightly, since a perfectly symmetrical blade reads as a diagram. The margin shape is what identifies the species, so decide on it before you outline anything.
How do I draw leaf veins?
Branch the secondary veins off the midrib at a consistent angle and curve each one toward the tip rather than straight to the edge. Keep them lighter than the outline so they stay inside the blade. Only add the fine net between them in one small area, or the leaf turns into a mesh.
How do I draw a group of leaves without it looking flat?
Turn them. A set of leaves reads as depth when some face you, some are seen edge on and one or two are foreshortened almost to a line. Overlap a few so the back ones are partly hidden, and detail only the front leaves fully.
How do I draw autumn leaves so they feel dry?
Dry leaves curl at the margin and break the smooth silhouette. Give the edge small irregular notches and lift a couple of corners away from the plane, then let the colour vary unevenly across the blade instead of grading smoothly. Crisp broken edges do more than any amount of brown.
How do I get a plain background or a transparent-looking cut-out?
Ask for a flat white background with no setting around the leaves, then crop it on the Canvas. That keeps the silhouettes clean enough to place into a pattern, a card layout or a set of matching botanical illustrations.
