How do I draw lips that do not look flat?
Treat the mouth as a form wrapped around the curve of the teeth rather than a flat shape on a flat face. The upper lip usually turns away from the light and reads darker, the lower lip catches it and reads lighter. Getting that one tonal relationship right does more than any amount of outlining.
What is the right way to draw the line between the lips?
The parting line is the darkest mark in the whole feature, so draw it first and keep everything else lighter. Vary its weight instead of ruling it evenly, heavier in the centre and at the corners, lighter where the lips lift away from each other. A uniform line makes the mouth look drawn on.
How do I draw a smile with teeth without it looking strange?
Do not outline every tooth. Draw the top edge of the tooth row and the shadow the upper lip casts on it, then suggest only one or two separations near the centre. The teeth should read as one pale shape held inside the mouth opening.
How do I draw lips in three-quarter view?
The far corner sits much closer to the centre than feels correct, because the form is turning away from you. Draw the centre line of the mouth first as a curve that follows the cylinder of the jaw, then place both corners on it. The near half will be noticeably wider than the far half.
How do I get a plain background behind a mouth study?
Ask for a flat white paper background with no face or setting around the feature, then crop it on the Canvas to the exact framing you want. That keeps a study sheet clean and makes it easy to drop a single mouth into a reference page or a print layout.
Can I keep a set of lip studies in one consistent style?
