How do I make a drawing look realistic?
Realism comes from the full tonal range and the right edges. Ask for a true black somewhere, paper white somewhere, and edges that are sharp where forms meet and soft where a surface turns away from the light.
What is the easiest realistic subject to start with?
A single eye, a piece of fruit or a folded cloth. Each has one clear form and one light direction, so you can push the shading hard without fighting proportion at the same time.
How do I draw realistic skin texture?
Keep it smooth in the lit areas and reserve the texture for where the form turns. Ask for pores and creases only in the shadow edge, and for the highlights on the nose and brow to stay clean.
How do I draw glass and metal realistically?
Both live on hard contrast. Ask for sharp-edged highlights against dark reflections with very little mid tone, and for the background to distort as it passes through or across the surface.
Which pencil grade should I ask for?
Ask for a range rather than one grade. 2H for the light structure, 2B through 4B for the mid tones, and 6B or 8B for the darkest accents. Naming the range is what gives the drawing depth.
Can I get a realistic drawing in colour?
Yes. Ask for coloured pencil with many burnished layers, and name the light colour and the shadow colour separately. Colour realism depends on that split more than on the hue itself.
