How do I draw stars without them looking like dots?
Vary the size and the spacing, and let them cluster instead of spreading evenly. A few should be large enough to earn a faint cross of light, most should be small, and some should barely register. On dark paper, reserve the brightest ones as untouched chalk rather than adding them last on top of tone.
How do I make a planet look spherical?
The terminator, the line between lit and unlit, is a curve rather than a straight cut, and it bows according to where the sun is. Keep the lit side brightest slightly inside the edge, not right at it, and let a thin band of reflected light sit on the dark limb so the sphere does not merge with the background.
Why do my space scenes look flat?
Usually because everything is the same value. Space has extreme contrast, so push the lit surfaces almost to bare white and the shadow sides almost to solid black, with very little in between. There is no atmosphere to soften a shadow, so the edge between them stays hard.
How do I draw craters on a moon surface?
Draw the ellipse of the rim first, then shade the inside wall on the sunward side and leave the opposite wall lit, which is the reverse of what most people expect. Overlap the craters and let later ones cut across the rims of older ones, because an evenly spaced field of equal circles never looks real.
How do I get a plain background or a different crop?
Ask for a flat white background if you want the object isolated, or flat black space with no stars if you want the subject alone against the void, then crop on the Canvas. Recropping helps a lot here, since moving the horizon off centre usually improves a space composition more than adding detail.
Can I keep a whole set of space drawings in one style?
Use Style Transfer. Lock the look of your first drawing, then apply it as you generate each planet or scene so the line weight, star density, contrast and palette stay the same. That matters for a solar system sheet or a poster series, where mismatched drawings break the set immediately.
