What makes a study different from a finished drawing?
A study isolates one problem and repeats it, so it is judged on what it taught rather than how it looks. That means construction lines stay visible, the background is usually left blank, and half the page can be abandoned attempts. A finished drawing hides its working; a study shows it.
How long should each study take?
Match the time to the goal. Gesture studies run thirty seconds to two minutes and chase movement rather than accuracy. Structural studies of a hand or a skull take twenty to forty minutes. Value studies can be five minutes if you restrict yourself to three tones and refuse to add a fourth.
How do I lay out a study sheet so it does not look crowded?
Rule a light margin, then place the largest study first and let the smaller ones fill around it rather than spacing everything evenly. Leave the white paper between drawings alone, because that gap is what separates them. Turning the page as you work also stops all the studies facing the same way.
Should I leave construction lines in a study sketch?
Yes, in most cases. The blocks, axes and centre lines are the record of how the form was reasoned out, and erasing them removes the part you would want to look back at. Keep them lighter than the final contour so the finished shape still reads clearly on top.
How do I crop a single study out of a full sheet?
Generate the sheet first, then crop to the one study you want on the Canvas and extend the paper around it if the margin is tight. That is easier than trying to compose a single study in isolation when you are still deciding which angle worked.
Can I keep a whole sketchbook of studies in one style?
