How do I draw a turtle shell so it looks domed?
Make the scutes narrow as they approach the shell edge and keep the centre row widest. Add shadow along the lower rim and leave the top light, and the shell reads as a curved surface rather than a flat disc.
How many plates does a turtle shell have?
Most turtles have five central scutes with four larger ones either side and a row of smaller marginal plates around the rim. Saying "central row, side row, small marginal rim" is usually enough to get the layout right.
What is the difference between drawing a turtle and a tortoise?
A tortoise has a taller domed shell and stumpy columnar legs, while a water turtle has a flatter shell and webbed or paddle-like limbs. Name which one you want so the limbs match the shell.
How do I draw a cute cartoon turtle?
