How do I draw a volcano that looks like a real one?
Break the symmetry. Real cones have one flank steeper than the other, a crater that sits off centre, and a rim that dips where past eruptions blew it out. Asking for an uneven silhouette and an off-centre crater fixes most of the toy-mountain look on its own.
How do I draw the ash plume?
Treat it as a stack of rounded masses rather than a cloud outline. The column is narrow and hard edged near the vent, then it widens and softens as it rises until the top spreads sideways. Keeping the edges softer the higher you go is what makes it read as moving.
How do I draw lava so it looks hot?
Work from the inside out. The flowing core is the lightest value in the drawing, almost white at the centre, then it steps through orange and red to a dull crust at the edge. Put the darkest rock right beside the brightest lava, because the contrast does the work, not the colour.
What is the difference between a cone volcano and a shield volcano when drawing?
A stratovolcano is tall and steep with concave slopes that curve up to a narrow summit. A shield volcano is broad and low, with slopes so gentle the whole form can be wider than the frame. Naming which one you want changes the silhouette completely.
How do I get a clean background for a volcano drawing?
