What does a gong sound like?
A soft initial contact followed by a metallic swell that arrives a moment later and then shimmers for several seconds. The delay between the strike and the bloom is the detail that separates a gong from a bell or a cymbal.
How do I make a gong sound effect?
Describe the disc, the mallet, and the decay. Say how large the gong is, whether the mallet is soft or hard, and how long the sound is allowed to ring. The decay is the part worth being specific about, because it is most of the sound.
Why does my gong sound like a cymbal?
Because the attack is too bright and the decay too short. A hard mallet on a small disc lands close to a cymbal, so ask for a large bronze disc, a soft mallet, and a swell that blooms after the strike rather than at it.
How long should a gong ring for?
Ten to fifteen seconds for a large one, and around four for a small one. Generate the full decay and fade it yourself in the edit, because a recording that has already been cut short cannot be extended back out.
How do I stop a gong swamping the dialogue after it?
Use a damped strike, or a small gong instead of a large one. The long low swell of a big disc sits directly under a speaking voice, so cutting the ring off at the source is far easier than fixing it with an equaliser afterwards.
