What makes a good notification sound?
Brevity and restraint. Under two seconds, a soft attack, and a short decay. Sharp attacks and long tails are what wear on people hearing a cue dozens of times a day, and a notification is judged on the fortieth time it plays rather than the first.
How do I design a set of cues that work together?
Use one voice across all of them and change only the pitch direction and the brightness. Rising means success, falling means failure, brighter means more urgent. A user then learns one family rather than several unrelated noises.
How long should a notification sound be?
Between one and two seconds for almost everything. Anything longer starts to feel like a delay in whatever the user was doing, and they notice that far more than they notice the sound itself.
Can I use a phone's built-in notification sound in my app?
No. The cues that ship with a platform are that company's assets, and reusing them in your own product is not something extracting the file makes lawful. Generating your own gives you a cue that does the same job and that you can ship.
How do I make an alert urgent without being annoying?
Change the note count and the brightness rather than the volume. Three separated bright notes read as more urgent than two soft ones at the same level, and raising the volume is what actually makes a cue unpleasant.
