How do I draw a bow and arrow easily?

Start with the string as a straight line and hang the bow off it, rather than drawing the curve first. Ask for a single even stroke and no shading, and the whole thing reduces to three shapes: two limbs, a grip and a shaft.

Why does my bow look flat?

Usually because the limbs are drawn as one symmetrical arc. Ask for a recurve, where the tips bend back the other way, and for the grip to be thicker than the limb ends. That change alone makes it read as an object rather than a symbol.

How do I draw the arrow so it looks nocked?

Say the shaft crosses in front of the grip and the nock sits on the string, not beside it. Ask for the string to bend very slightly at that point, which is what tells a viewer the arrow is actually held there.
