What perspective should I use for a city drawing?
One-point works for a street you are standing in the middle of, because everything recedes to a single point on the horizon. Two-point suits a corner or a building seen at an angle. Three-point is only worth it when you are looking steeply up or down, since it makes the verticals converge as well.
How do I draw rows of windows without them drifting out of line?
Draw the top and bottom edge of the whole window band first, both running to the vanishing point, then divide the band. Spacing narrows as the wall recedes, so halve the remaining gap each time rather than measuring equal steps, which is what keeps a facade from looking stretched.
How do I get depth into a skyline?
Use three levels of finish. Draw the nearest buildings with full window detail and the darkest line, the middle band in simplified contour, and the far band as flat pale shapes with no detail at all. Atmospheric fade does the work that shading cannot.
How do I make a city drawing feel lived in?
Break the regularity. Add a few air conditioning units, a fire escape, uneven shop awnings, and vary the roofline heights so no two adjacent buildings match. A handful of small figures at street level also fixes the scale immediately.
How do I crop a city drawing or clear the background?
Ask for a plain white sky with no clouds if you want to place the skyline over something else, then crop it on the Canvas to the band you need. Cropping to just below the rooflines is usually the strongest composition for a header or a print.
Can I keep a set of city drawings in one style?
