Draw what is within reach: the corner of your desk, your own hand in three positions, a plant on the sill, a shoe on the floor. Objects you can see solve the hardest part of sketching, which is deciding what the thing looks like.
What are good sketch ideas for beginners?
Single objects with clear silhouettes, so a mug, a key, a leaf or a folded cloth. Start with contour line only and no shading, then add one light direction once the shape is right.
How do I fill a sketchbook page rather than one small drawing?
Work in sets. Draw the same object three times at different angles, or four unrelated studies at the same scale. A page reads as finished when the marks are spread across it, not when one drawing is perfect.
How do I keep a sketch looking loose?
Ask for searching lines and construction marks left visible, and for wash applied in one pass rather than built up. Over-rendering is what turns a sketch into an unfinished painting.
