How do I design a monster that looks original rather than generic?
Start from one real animal skeleton and break a single rule of it. Give a four-legged body two extra joints in the front limbs, or move the eyes off the head onto the shoulders. One clear deviation reads as a designed creature, while changing everything at once reads as a blob.
How many eyes should a monster have?
Pick an odd number or a cluster, not a symmetrical pair, if you want it to feel wrong. One large eye reads friendly and cartoon, three or more in a vertical row reads unsettling. Keep the pupils consistent in size so the cluster still looks like one organism.
What is the easiest monster to draw for a beginner?
A blob body with simple limbs. Draw one closed shape, add two or three legs of unequal length, then place a single eye slightly off centre. The whole appeal comes from the silhouette, so you can finish it in pure contour with no shading.
How do I draw fur, scales and skin so they read differently?
Change the mark, not the outline. Fur is short overlapping strokes that break the contour. Scales are a repeating grid of small shapes that follow the body curve and shrink toward the edges. Smooth skin is a clean unbroken line with tone only where the form turns.
How do I get a plain background behind a monster drawing?
