Where do I start when drawing a nose?

Why do drawn noses often look flat?
Because they are treated as an outline rather than a form. Ask for the nose blocked into planes, a top, two sides and a base, each given its own value before anything is blended.
How do I draw a nose in three-quarter view?
In three quarters the far nostril is partly hidden and the bridge shifts off centre. Naming both of those in the prompt is what stops the study drifting back toward a flat front view.
How dark should the shadow under the nose be?
It is usually the darkest note in the middle of a face, with a soft edge rather than a hard one. Ask for a soft-edged shadow that falls across the upper lip.
