What is the difference between one, two and three point perspective?
It is how many sets of parallel edges run away from you. One point means you face a wall square on and only the depth edges converge. Two point means you face a corner and both side walls converge. Three point adds the verticals, which happens when you look sharply up or down.
Where do I put the horizon line?
At the height of the viewer eye, not at the middle of the paper. Sitting on the ground puts it low and you see the undersides of things. Standing puts it at head height. Looking from a window puts it near the top, and everything below it shows its top surface.
Why does my perspective drawing look distorted at the edges?
The vanishing points are too close together. When they sit near the frame the cone of vision is exaggerated and near objects stretch. Push them well outside the sheet, often a page width beyond each edge, and the drawing settles into a natural-looking view.
How do I space repeating things like fence posts or windows?
Do not measure them evenly. Draw the first two, cross the rectangle they make to find its centre, then run a line from the top of the first post through that centre to the ground line to place the next. Repeat, and the gaps close correctly as they recede.
How do I crop a perspective drawing or clear the background?
Ask for a flat white background with nothing beyond the structure if you want the geometry on its own, then crop on the Canvas. Cropping after the fact also lets you move the horizon within the frame, which changes the feel of the view without redrawing it.
Can I keep a series of perspective drawings in one style?
Use Style Transfer. Lock the look of the first drawing, then apply it across the series so the line weight, hatching and paper tone stay matched. That is worth doing for a teaching sheet where several views of the same system sit side by side.
