How do I draw a rainforest without drawing every leaf?
Ask for foliage in clumped masses with a light side and a shadow side. Pick out a handful of individual leaves only at the silhouette edge and let the rest stay as texture.
What are the four rainforest layers I should draw?
Emergent trees standing above everything, the closed canopy below them, a sparse understory of small trees and shrubs, and the dark forest floor. Stacking them in one side-on view shows all four.
How do I get depth into a rainforest drawing?
Use three planes with different values. Dark foreground foliage, a mid ground with the most detail, and pale flattened shapes behind. Without that separation the green becomes one wall.
How do I draw light coming through the canopy?
Keep the shafts as the lightest areas on the page and darken everything they pass through. In graphite or charcoal it is easier to lift the shaft back out with an eraser than to draw around it.
Can I draw a rainforest in black and white?
Yes. Brush ink and graphite both work well because the biome is really about density and contrast. State that the drawing is monochrome so the layers separate by tone instead of colour.
Can I add animals to a rainforest drawing?
Name one or two specifically, and say where in the layers they sit. Asking for a general crowd of animals usually makes them small and indistinct, while two placed clearly reads better.
