How many arms does a squid have?
Eight short arms and two much longer feeding tentacles, so ten limbs in total. The two tentacles are smooth for most of their length and only carry suckers on a club-shaped tip. Drawing all ten the same length is the most common mistake.
How do I draw a squid so it does not look like an octopus?
The mantle and the fins. A squid has a long pointed mantle with a triangular fin on each side, and it moves lengthways. An octopus has a soft round body and no fins. Say "pointed mantle with side fins" and the two stop blurring together.
How do I draw the suckers?
Draw them in rows that shrink toward the arm tip and turn with the arm as it twists. Detail two arms fully and let the others fade into plain line. Every sucker at the same size flattens the arm out immediately.
What colours suit a squid drawing?
Squid skin shifts, so avoid one flat colour. Iridescent pink, cream and turquoise flickering over a warmer base works for a reef squid, while a deep water giant reads better as deep red over near-black.
Can I draw a squid as a natural history plate?
Yes, and it suits the subject. Ask for the animal drawn once from above and once from the side in fine pen on plain cream, with a scale bar beneath. Add any lettering yourself on the Canvas so it stays sharp.
How do I make a deep sea squid drawing feel dark without losing the shape?
Light one edge only. Keep almost the whole body in smudged dark, then lift a thin rim along the mantle and one arm, plus the eye. The eye is the anchor, so give it the highest contrast in the frame.
