How do I draw a flying saucer that sits correctly in perspective?
Draw the disc as an ellipse, not a circle, and decide early how far above or below your eye line the craft sits. The higher it is, the flatter that ellipse gets. Put the dome on the same ellipse centre and repeat the curve for the rim underneath, and the whole hull locks together.
How do I make a UFO look like it is hovering rather than parked?
Give it nothing to rest on and put some ground underneath at a clearly lower level. A soft pool of light or a faint shadow directly below sells the gap. Tilting the disc a few degrees off level also helps, because a perfectly horizontal craft reads as a prop on a table.
How do I draw the light beam?
Draw it as two straight edges widening from the underside to the ground, not as a soft glow. Keep the inside of the beam lighter than the sky and let it fade slightly as it descends. Adding a few dust specks inside the cone is what makes it read as light rather than a painted shape.
What shapes other than a saucer work for a UFO drawing?
