Kung fu sound effects

The stylised film version: an exaggerated impact, the whoosh of a miss, a fast flurry, cloth snapping on a turn, and the shout that lands with the strike.

  • Ask for the miss as well as the hit, because the whooshes are what make a fight look fast
  • Audio cut for your choreography rather than a stock impact pack used everywhere

Fight audio for film, games, and animation

Exaggerated impact

A hard flat slap with a bright crack over it. Two layers rather than one, which is what makes it read as film rather than life.

Whoosh of a miss

Air passing close with no impact at all. Used more than any hit, because a fight is mostly things not connecting.

Fast flurry

Five impacts in quick succession at slightly uneven spacing. Perfectly even spacing reads as a machine gun instead.

Cloth snap

Fabric snapped taut with a sharp cracking flap. Sells a turn or a stance where no contact happens at all.

Strike shout

A short sharp vocal cut off hard on the contact frame. Lands with the hit rather than before it.

Body hitting the floor

A heavy flat landing with a short settle. Ends an exchange, and the settle is what gives it weight.

Ways to use a kung fu sound effect

Punctuate a strike

The impact lands on the contact frame and the shout with it. A frame either way and the choreography stops reading as real.

Fill an exchange without music

Whooshes between the hits carry the rhythm of a fight, so a sequence plays without a track deciding its pace.

Tell the audience how skilled they are

Five fast impacts at uneven spacing reads as trained. Single heavy hits with gaps between read as a brawl.

Sell a move you never filmed

A cloth snap and a whoosh over a cut implies a turn the camera missed, which covers a lot of choreography you did not shoot.

よくある質問

Why do my fight sounds feel flat?
One layer. A film impact is a flat slap for the body plus a bright crack for the style, and asking for both in the same prompt is what separates it from somebody hitting a cushion.
How many whooshes does a fight need?
More than hits. Most of a fight is movement that does not connect, and the whooshes are what make it look fast. Editors new to this usually cut in far too few.
How is this different from the punch page?
That page is a realistic impact. This is the stylised film version, deliberately exaggerated, and it includes the misses, the cloth, and the shout that a realistic punch page does not.
Why does my flurry sound like gunfire?
The spacing is perfectly even. Ask for slightly uneven spacing between the impacts, since a person throwing strikes never lands them on a fixed interval.
Where should the shout go?
On the contact frame, with the hit rather than before it. A shout that leads the impact reads as dubbing, where one that lands together reads as effort.
Can I use these in a game or a monetised video?
Yes. Audio generated on a paid Morphic plan is cleared for commercial use, including games, film, and monetised video.
