Phone call sound effect

Every step a caller hears, from the tone on an open line to the click at the end. Generate the piece your scene needs and place them in whatever order it plays.

  • Ask for the exact step you need, the tone, the dialling, or the connect
  • Cues built for your product rather than lifted from a handset somebody else made
  • Clean audio sized to sit inside an app build or straight under picture
A handset lifted just clear of its cradle, cord curling below, hard light catching the worn keypad beneath it

Call cues from the open line to the hang-up

Dial tone

Two tones held together with no waver in them. This is the version most edits want, because a second of it tells the audience a line is open and nobody has dialled yet.

Touch tone dialling

Paired beeps pressed at an uneven human pace. The unevenness is what sells it, because a perfectly spaced run reads as a machine dialling rather than a person.

Ring-back

The muffled purr the caller hears while the far end rings. It is a different sound from the ring itself, and using the wrong one puts the audience on the wrong side of the call.

Connect click

A tiny click and a change in the air as the line opens. Half a second of it carries the whole moment of somebody picking up, with nothing needing to be said.

Busy signal

One flat tone pulsing evenly on and off. Reach for it when the point is that the call did not happen, which is a harder thing to show on screen than a call that did.

Hang-up and dead line

A hard plastic clack and then nothing but a thin dead tone. The abruptness is the point, because a call ending gently and a call being ended read completely differently.

Ways to use a phone call sound effect

Mark the second somebody picks up

A click and a change in the air lands the connection on the frame you choose. It works the same in an app demo, a visual novel or a live-action scene.

Hold the wait while a call goes unanswered

A ring-back repeating over long silences carries twelve seconds on its own. The audience starts counting the bursts, which does more for tension than a track would.

Show which decade the phone belongs to

Touch tones pressed by hand place a scene in an era as clearly as any prop. Period animation and retro interface audio both use them for exactly that reason.

Tell the audience a call never went through

A busy tone pulsing on an open line implies a person at the other end who is unavailable. You never have to cut to them for the audience to draw the conclusion.

よくある質問

What is a phone call sound effect?
It is any of the cues a caller hears across a call rather than one sound. An open line, keys being pressed, the far end ringing, a click as somebody answers and a tone after they hang up are all separate effects that happen to belong to the same event.
How do I make a phone call sound effect?
Say which step of the call you want and what is producing it. Describe a steady pair of tones through a small earpiece speaker, or short paired beeps pressed by hand, and give the sound a length. Asking for a phone call on its own returns something different every time.
What is the difference between a ring and a ring-back?
The ring is what the person being called hears in the room, and the ring-back is the muffled purr the caller hears in the earpiece. Using the room ring for a caller puts the audience on the wrong end of the line, which most viewers notice without knowing why.
How do I make a voice sound like it is on the phone?
Change the colour of the recording rather than its level. Take the low weight and the bright top off so only the middle remains, and add a faint short echo behind it. That narrow band is what the ear recognises as an earpiece.
How long should a call cue in an app be?
Around one and a half to two seconds for a connect or a hang-up, and longer only when the wait is the point. Generate at least a second and a half even for the shortest cue, since anything briefer tends to come back thin, then trim it where you need it.
Can I use generated phone call sounds commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. Generating these is also cleaner than recording a real line, since network tones vary by country and a captured one can carry a real number behind it.
