Snap sound effect

One instant of tension letting go. Name the material under strain, say how dry or wet the break is, and get a snap with the heft your cut needs.

  • Name the material and how hard it breaks, from a fingertip to a branch
  • A break shaped for your cut instead of three stock hits stacked together
  • Audio dry enough that the transient survives an export
A dry twig splitting in two at the exact instant of the break, splinters lifting from the fracture

Snap sounds for edits, animation, and game audio

Finger snap

A hard bright crack with the slap of skin behind it and no ring. This is the one most people arrive looking for, and the skin behind the transient is what stops it sounding like a click track.

Twig break

A sharp splintering crack with a small fibrous tear after it. The tear is what makes it read as wood rather than a stick hitting something, and it is worth asking for every time.

Plastic clip

A tight high click and a hollow rattle as two halves part. Reach for it when the snap is a mechanism working correctly rather than something being destroyed.

Celery break

A wet fibrous crack with strings pulling apart slowly afterwards. Sound departments have used produce for bodily breaks for decades, and the slow tear is the reason it works.

Elastic release

A rubber band stretched to its limit and let go, with a whip of air behind the crack. It is the only card here where something is still moving after the break.

Branch break

A slow groan under load, then a heavy crack and the fall of what it was holding. Four seconds of material giving way, so it carries weight a fingertip snap never can.

Ways to use a snap sound effect

Land a cut on one hard sound

A finger snap gives an edit a single frame to cut on. It works as a scene change in a short, a menu confirmation in a game, or a chapter break in a podcast.

Hold a quiet stretch with something breaking slowly

The branch runs four seconds from groan to settle, which is long enough to fill a wordless passage in an animation or a game level without any music underneath.

Say what a thing is made of in one sound

Dry wood, rigid plastic and wet fibre snap in obviously different ways. Choosing between them tells an audience the material long before anything in the picture does.

Suggest an injury you would never show

A wet fibrous break off camera makes an audience flinch harder than anything on screen. Radio drama, animation and horror games all lean on that gap deliberately.

よくある質問

How do I make a snap sound effect?
Name the material and the strain rather than the word snap. Say what is being bent, squeezed or stretched, how thick it is, and whether the break is dry or wet. A generator builds a far better transient from a twig bent past its limit than from a snap.
How do I get a finger snap rather than a click?
Ask for the skin as well as the crack. A finger snap is a fingertip slapping the base of the thumb immediately behind the release, and without that soft second element the result sounds like a clave or a metronome.
Why does my snap disappear once the video is exported?
Because the transient is the first thing compression takes. Ask for a break with a short body behind the crack, not just the crack, so there is something left when the file is encoded and played back on a phone speaker.
What is the difference between a snap and a crack?
Length and what happens afterwards. A snap is over almost instantly with a clean parting, while a crack usually carries a longer tearing tail as material keeps failing. Asking for the tail is how you move between the two.
How do sound teams fake bones breaking?
With food. Raw celery, carrots and frozen lettuce break with the wet fibrous character an audience reads as a body, which is why describing produce gives a more convincing result than describing an injury directly.
Can I use generated snap sound effects commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. On a sound this short it is also worth knowing that a generated take is yours alone, where a snap pulled from a shared pack turns up in other work constantly.
