Spooky sound effects

Dread you can place: slow drones, dry creaks, breath with no words in it, and a pulse under the floor. Describe the tension your scene needs and Morphic builds it.

Spooky sound effects for film, games, and animation

Low drone bed

A sustained low bed with no melody anywhere in it. This is the thing most horror cuts are actually missing: it lifts the tension of a held shot without the audience registering that a sound was added.

Door creak

One slow hinge turning, dry and wavering, with a definite stop at the end. Reach for it when a door opens on screen and the movement on its own is not carrying any of the dread.

Wordless whisper

Breath shaped like speech with nothing intelligible inside it, so nobody has to write a line. It works in a game corridor as readily as in a film, because there is no language to translate.

Metal on stone

A thin edge dragged across rough stone, brightening and tightening as it travels. The rise is doing the work, which is why it can sit under a slow push-in with nothing else happening in frame.

Floorboards overhead

Dry timber flexing under a weight the audience never sees. It puts a person in the room above with no actor, no second set, and no extra camera setup.

Slow pulse

A dull, evenly repeating thud with the top end gone, nearer a heartbeat than a drum. Laid quietly under a held shot it sets a pace the audience follows without ever hearing it.

Ways to use spooky sound effects

Sharpen the moment the audience should flinch

A brightening scrape lands the exact frame something moves. It does the same job in a horror short, a game cutscene, or a true-crime episode with no picture at all.

Sit under a scene where nobody speaks

A slow drone holds a wordless stretch that would otherwise need a score. It carries a podcast cold open as easily as it carries a long take in a film.

Make a house sound abandoned from the first frame

Timber flexing and settling tells the audience a building is old and empty before any character says so, whether the building is a film location or a game level.

Let the audience decide what is in the dark

Breath with no words in it lets every viewer imagine something different. It costs nothing to stage and reads the same in animation as it does in live action.

よくある質問

What makes a sound spooky?
A spooky sound is one the ear cannot quite identify. Low sustained tones, dry creaks, and breath without words all withhold a clear source, so the listener keeps searching for one, and that search is what an audience reads as tension.
How do I make my own spooky sound effects?
Describe the mechanism rather than the mood. Say what is moving, what it is rubbing or flexing against, how fast it repeats, and how long it runs. A prompt that says dry timber flexing under a shifting weight gets you further than a prompt that says eerie.
What is the difference between a horror drone and a stinger?
A drone runs underneath a scene and a stinger marks a single frame. The drone is what raises the baseline tension across a whole sequence, while the stinger spends that tension in one instant, which is why stacking stingers stops working after the second one.
How do I stop a horror bed from clashing with dialogue?
Keep it low and keep it slow. A bed that sits under about 200 Hz and changes over several seconds leaves the whole speech range clear, whereas a texture with a bright rasp in it competes for exactly the frequencies that carry consonants.
How do I build a scare without a musical sting?
Use a real object in the space. A hinge, a floorboard, or a piece of metal against stone is diegetic, so the audience accepts it as part of the world rather than as a cue from outside it, and the scare lands without announcing itself first.
Can I use generated spooky sound effects commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. For horror in particular that matters more than usual, because the recognisable scare textures in circulation are exactly the ones with the murkiest provenance.
