Gasp sound effect

One breath pulled in, and a scene turns. Ask for the speed of the intake, how long it is held, and whether it is one person or a whole room.

  • Ask for the speed of the intake and how long the breath is held
  • A reaction breathed for your shot, not a clip pulled off a stock library
  • Clean vocal audio that lines up with the face already in the frame
A mouth caught open mid-breath in raking side light, the rest of the face falling into shadow

Gasps for reactions, reveals, and reaction shots

Shocked gasp

Air snatched in fast and stopped dead. The default reaction take, and the one that works over a cut with nothing else supporting it.

Slow wondering gasp

Drawn in steadily rather than snatched, and held at the top. Slowing the intake turns alarm into awe, using the same breath and nothing else.

Gasp and release

Breath in, a pause, then a shaky exhale. The whole reaction in one take, which saves cutting a gasp and a sigh together and hoping the join is invisible.

Small gasp

Short, high and barely voiced. It reads as a private reaction rather than a performed one, so it survives being placed under a close-up that is playing quietly.

Room of gasps

Several people catching breath a fraction apart. The scatter is what makes it a room, since intakes landing on the same instant sound like one take copied.

Gasping for air

Fast repeated breaths dragged in and out with nothing between them. It carries exhaustion or panic, and it runs long enough to lay under a whole recovery shot.

Ways to use a gasp sound effect

Mark a reveal the instant it arrives

A sharp intake stops dead on the frame you place it, so a twist lands without a music sting doing the work. It plays in a comic panel animation as well as on film.

Carry a held shot on breathing alone

Repeated gasping fills the seconds after something goes wrong, keeping a game sequence or a podcast retelling moving without a score under it.

Turn a scene from alarm to wonder

A slow drawn-in breath held at the top tells an audience the moment is beautiful rather than dangerous, and it sets that reading before anybody speaks.

Fill a silence with a room reacting

Scattered intakes past the edge of frame put an audience in the space, so a single close-up suddenly has a crowd watching it that nobody had to stage.

자주 묻는 질문

What makes a gasp read as shock rather than surprise?
The speed of the intake and the ending. Air snatched in fast and cut off dead reads as shock, while the same volume of breath drawn in slowly and held reads as wonder. The mouth position matters too: wider is harsher and rougher.
How do I make a gasp sound effect?
Describe the movement of air. Say how quickly the breath is pulled in, how open the mouth is, whether the breath is held at the top, and whether it is released or clipped. Those four details separate every version of a gasp from every other.
Why does my gasp come back sounding like a sigh?
Because the direction was not specified. A sigh is air going out and a gasp is air coming in, so say explicitly that the breath is drawn in, and add a hard stop at the end so nothing trails outward.
How long should a gasp be?
Around a second and a half for a reaction and up to three when the breath has to be held. Asking for anything much shorter tends to come back thin or empty, so generate the longer version and trim the front in your edit.
How do I make a group gasp sound like a crowd?
Ask for the intakes to overlap unevenly instead of landing together. A crowd never breathes on the same instant, and the tiny scatter between people is the only thing that separates a room from one voice layered on itself.
Can I use a generated gasp commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. Generating the breath also means the reaction is timed to your cut rather than to whatever pace the original recording happened to be performed at.
