Why effects get lost in music

When you drop an effect on top, it lands in a range the music already occupies, so it either disappears or turns the moment into mush. Mixing is the practice of carving out space so each sound is heard for what it is. The four levers below, levels, frequency, ducking, and panning, are how you carve that space.
Set levels with a clear hierarchy
Start by deciding what matters most at each moment. If an impact is the point of a cut, the music should step back for it. Set your music bed at a level that supports the picture, then bring effects in above it only as loud as they need to be to register.
