FAQs

How do I draw a donut that looks round rather than flat?
Treat it as a ring, not a circle with a hole. The inner opening should be an ellipse slightly off centre, and the shading should wrap around the tube so the far side of the hole is darker than the near side.
How do I draw glaze?
Draw the glaze as its own shape sitting on top of the dough, with an uneven edge and a few drips running down the side. Leave one clean highlight unmarked on the glaze so it reads as wet.
How do I draw sprinkles so they do not look stuck on?
Vary the angle of every sprinkle and let them follow the curve of the ring, shorter and more crowded near the edges. Add a tiny shadow under each one on the lit side of the donut.
How do I draw a bite taken out of a donut?
Break the outline with a rough concave edge, then show the crumb inside as a lighter, more open texture than the smooth glazed surface. The contrast between the two is what makes the bite convincing.
What is the easiest way to draw a donut for a menu?
Use one even line weight, no shading and a plain background. A clean contour reproduces well at small print sizes, and you can add flat colour later without redrawing anything.
Can I draw a set of donuts that match?
Generate one you like, then use Style Transfer so the rest of the dessert set keeps the same line weight and palette. It is the fastest way to fill a box or a menu row.
