FAQs

How do I draw a family group so it does not look like a lineup?
Stagger the figures in depth rather than along a single line. Put one slightly forward, overlap the shoulders of the two behind, and vary the head heights by more than just age. Overlap is what makes a group read as one shape instead of separate cut-outs.
How do I get the heights right between adults and children?
Work in head counts rather than centimetres. An adult is roughly seven to eight heads tall, a ten-year-old about six, a toddler about four, with a proportionally larger head each time you go younger. Set every figure against the same baseline first, then draw.
How do I draw faces in a family drawing without them all looking the same?
Change one structural thing per person rather than adding detail: the jaw width, the distance between the brows and the eyes, or the hairline shape. Keep the level of finish identical across the group, because a single over-rendered face pulls the whole drawing out of balance.
How do I draw hands when figures are holding hands?
Draw the joined hands as one simple mass first, then find the two or three fingers that actually show. Most held hands only reveal a thumb and a couple of fingertips, so resolving every knuckle is what makes them look swollen and wrong.
How do I get a plain background or crop a family drawing tighter?
Ask for a flat white background with no room or garden around the group, then crop on the Canvas to waist level if you want the faces larger. That keeps it clean enough for a card front, a school display or a framed print.
Can I keep a set of family drawings in one style?
Use Style Transfer. Lock the look of the first drawing, then apply it as you generate the others so the line weight, the face treatment and the palette stay the same across the set. That is what lets you draw several households and still have them sit together on one page.
