FAQs

How do I draw lilies step by step?
Start with the centre point and draw six petals radiating from it, alternating three in front and three behind. Curl the tips back last, then add the stamens, since they sit on top of everything else and finish the flower.
How many petals does a lily have?
Six parts arranged in two sets of three, which is why a lily looks star shaped from the front. Drawing the back three slightly narrower where they pass behind is what keeps the bloom from looking flat.
How do I draw several lilies without them looking identical?
Turn each head to a different angle: one facing the viewer, one in profile, one seen three quarters from behind. Add a closed bud and a spent bloom and the stem immediately looks observed rather than repeated.
What is the difference between drawing lilies and water lilies?
A trumpet lily is a side-on flower with recurved petals and prominent stamens. A water lily is drawn from above as a shallow cup of many narrow petals sitting flat on a round pad, so the whole composition is top-down.
Can I get a lilies drawing on a plain background?
Yes. Ask for a plain white background with no vase, no foliage and no cast shadow, then crop it on the Canvas. That gives you a clean stem to place into a card, an invitation or a printed layout.
What medium suits a lilies drawing best?
Graphite handles the soft petal gradients and the stamens, coloured pencil carries the speckling on a tiger lily, and watercolour with an ink contour suits water lilies because the washes read as light on the pond.
