FAQs

How do I draw plants that look believable?
Get the leaf attachment right before any detail. Leaves grow from a node on the stem, alternate or opposite, and each one turns slightly so you see some from the front and some edge on. Asking for varied leaf angles is what stops a plant looking pressed flat.
How do I draw leaf veins?
Draw the midrib first as a curve that follows the twist of the leaf, then branch the secondary veins off it at a consistent angle toward the tip. Keep them lighter than the outline so they sit inside the leaf instead of cutting it up.
What plants are easiest to draw for a beginner?
Succulents and cacti, because the forms are simple geometric volumes with no fine leaf edges. A monstera is next, since the large leaves are few and the shape is distinctive even when drawn simply.
How do I draw a group of plants without it looking cluttered?
Vary the heights and let the pots overlap slightly so the group reads as one shape. Detail the front plant fully, simplify the middle one and reduce the back one to contour only. That depth ordering does more than adding shading.
How do I get a plain background for a plant drawing?
Ask for a flat white background with no room or setting around the plant, then crop it on the Canvas. That keeps the silhouette clean enough to place into a card, a print layout or a set of matching illustrations.
Can I keep a whole set of plant drawings in one style?
Use Style Transfer. Lock the look of the first drawing, then apply it as you generate each species so the line weight, leaf treatment and palette stay the same across the set, which matters if you are making a series of prints.
