What sounds does a DJ set actually need?
Five jobs cover most of it: a scratch to mark an edit, a backspin to reset, a riser to build tension, an impact to land the drop, and a stutter to break up a held section. Everything else tends to be a variation on one of those five gestures.
How do I make a DJ sound effect?
Describe the physical movement. Say what is moving, whether the pitch climbs or falls, whether it is a single event or a repeating pattern, and how long it lasts. A generator understands "noise sweeping upward in pitch for eight seconds" far better than it understands "riser".
Why should a riser have no melody in it?
Because a melodic riser only fits tracks in the same key. Filtered noise has no pitch centre, so it sits over anything, which is why the noise sweep is the version that gets used and the tonal one usually does not.
How long should a build be?
Match it to the phrase you are building over, which usually means around eight seconds rather than two. Generate the longer version and trim from the front, since a sweep that starts late never recovers the tension it skipped.
Why does my drop not hit on small speakers?
Because a pure sub-bass impact has nothing above the range a phone speaker can reproduce. Ask for some grit or distortion in the body, which adds harmonics higher up, and the same hit suddenly reads on a laptop as well as a club rig.
