How do I draw a koi so it looks like it is swimming?
Start with a single curved line for the spine and build the body around it, rather than drawing a symmetrical fish shape and bending it afterwards. The head leads the curve, the tail trails behind it, and the fins stream away from the direction of travel. A straight spine reads as a dead fish no matter how good the detail is.
How do I draw koi fins?
Draw the fin as a soft outer shape first, then add the rays inside it as fine lines fanning from the base. Keep the rays lighter than the outline so the fin stays translucent, and let the trailing edge waver rather than running as a clean curve. Long fins should look like cloth in water.
How do I place the patches on a koi convincingly?
Patch edges follow the form, so a patch crossing the flank curves with the body and narrows as it wraps toward the belly. Keep the shapes irregular and let a few break at the fin base rather than stopping neatly. Patches that stay symmetrical on both sides look printed on.
