Alarm sound effects

A bedside clock at six, a smoke detector chirping, a car alarm outside, and the klaxon that clears a building. Each one says something different.

  • Name the device, since each alarm means a different thing
  • An alarm built for your room, not a shared stock clip
  • Clean audio you can cut off mid-ring

Alarm types for film, games, and animation

Bedside clock

0:05

Twin bells hammered by a striker with a metallic rattle. Mechanical rather than electronic, which dates a scene as much as it wakes anyone.

Modifier le prompt

Smoke detector

0:05

One piercing chirp with a long silence around it. The gap is what makes it maddening, because you cannot ignore it or act on it.

Modifier le prompt

Car alarm

0:06

Alternating urgent tones with a street echo. The echo is what puts it outside, which is where a car alarm always is.

Modifier le prompt

Phone alarm

0:04

A gentle marimba pattern building slightly. Designed not to startle, which is what makes it read as the present day.

Modifier le prompt

Building evacuation

0:06

A harsh repeating klaxon with hard reflections. The corridor around it is what makes it institutional rather than domestic.

Modifier le prompt

Alarm cut off

0:04

A ring stopped dead mid-cycle. Someone silenced it, and that action is the story rather than the alarm itself.

Ways to use alarm sound effects

Open a scene by waking someone

A hard mechanical ring starts a scene at full energy, and it tells the audience the hour without any dialogue.

Let a chirp needle a scene quietly

A detector chirping at long intervals sits under dialogue and slowly becomes unbearable, which is a rare trick for a sound this small.

Date a scene by the device

Twin bells say decades ago, a marimba pattern says now, and a klaxon says a building rather than a home.

Show someone reacting off screen

An alarm cut off mid-cycle tells the audience a hand reached out, in a shot that never shows the person.

Questions fréquentes

Which alarm should I use for my scene?
Pick by meaning rather than by tone. A mechanical bedside clock wakes someone and dates the scene, a smoke detector needles a room, a car alarm happens outside, and a klaxon clears a building. Each carries a different situation.
Why is a smoke detector chirp so effective?
Because of the silence around it. A single chirp at a long interval cannot be ignored or acted on, so it sits under a scene and accumulates irritation in a way that a continuous alarm never does.
How do I date a scene with an alarm?
Use the mechanism. Twin bells struck by a hammer read as decades ago, while a gentle rising marimba pattern reads as a modern phone. The device places the period more precisely than most props would.
How do I show someone turning an alarm off?
Generate it stopping abruptly mid-cycle. The instant silence tells an audience a hand reached out, and it works in a shot that never cuts to the person or the clock.
How do I make an alarm sound like it is in a building?
Ask for clear reflections between the tones. A hard-walled corridor gives a klaxon a distinct slapback, and that reflection is what separates an institution from a device sitting on a table.
Can I use these alarm sounds commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. Because each one is generated rather than pulled from a shared catalogue, you also avoid the clip turning up in someone else's scene.
