How do I draw a DNA double helix so the twist looks right?
Draw two parallel wavy lines a half cycle out of step with each other, then join them with rungs. The rungs shorten as the strands cross and widen again as they separate. Rungs of equal length are the single most common mistake.
How many turns should a DNA drawing show?
Two or three full turns is enough to read as a helix without crowding the page. One turn looks like a ribbon, and more than four turns squeezes the rungs until they merge into a solid band at small sizes.
How do I show which strand is in front?
Break the line of the rear strand where the front one crosses it and darken the rear strand slightly. That single overlap cue does more for the three-dimensional read than any amount of shading.
