What is an easy shell drawing to start with?
A scallop. It is close to symmetrical and the ribs are straight rays from the hinge, so the structure is easy to keep honest. A spiral conch is harder because the turns have to shrink at a steady rate.
How do I draw a shell spiral correctly?
Each turn should be smaller than the last by the same proportion, and the ridges should follow the spiral rather than run straight across it. Say that in the prompt and the shell stops looking flat.
How do I make a shell look glossy rather than chalky?
Gloss is contrast in a small space: a hard bright highlight, a quick fall to mid tone and reflected light bouncing back into the shadow. A chalky shell has soft edges everywhere and no strong highlight.
How do I draw the inside of a shell?
The opening is the darkest part of the drawing and it needs a soft edge, not an outline. Ask for deep shadow inside the lip, then leave a thin bright rim along the edge where the light catches.
Can I get a shell drawing on a plain background?
