Musical sound effects

Instruments as objects rather than as score: one struck piano note, a plucked string, a cymbal choked by a hand, a lid closing, and a needle finding a groove.

  • Ask for one note or one gesture, which is what separates an effect from a piece of music
  • Audio cut for your scene rather than a library note already used across other productions
  • Download clean audio and drop it straight into your edit

Musical sound effects

Instrument sounds for film, games, and animation

Single piano note

Struck firmly and left to ring with the pedal down. Five seconds of decay, which is where all the feeling is.

プロンプトを編集

String pluck

A bright attack and a fast decaying buzz. One note, which is what keeps it an effect rather than a phrase.

プロンプトを編集

Choked cymbal

A crash stopped dead by a hand. The cut-off is the effect, and it lands a beat that a full crash would smear.

プロンプトを編集

Piano lid closing

A heavy wooden lid dropping with a faint sympathetic ring from the strings. The ring is what makes it a piano.

プロンプトを編集

Needle drop

A short scratch then a soft repeating crackle. Two seconds of this and an audience knows the decade.

プロンプトを編集

Guitar case and strap

Latches, a lid, and a strap pulled over a shoulder. Nothing is played, which is why it reads as a musician rather than music.

Ways to use a musical sound effect

Punctuate a realisation

One piano note under a held close-up marks a moment without committing the scene to a score.

Fill a pause without music

A needle drop and its surface crackle give a silent room something to sit on, and it is texture rather than a track.

End a scene on a hard stop

A choked cymbal cuts a moment dead, which is more decisive than fading out and costs one frame.

Imply the musician you never show

Latches, a lid and a strap put somebody packing up just out of frame, so a scene can be about music without any playing.

よくある質問

What is the difference between a musical sound effect and music?
Count. One note or one gesture is an effect and sits inside a scene. Two or more notes in sequence starts to be a phrase, and a phrase asks the audience to listen to it rather than through it.
How is this different from the stinger and riser pages?
Those are cues, written to move an edit along. These are objects: a lid, a case, a needle, one struck note. Instruments as Foley rather than as score.
How do I get a single note rather than a melody?
Say one, and say how it ends. "One single note struck firmly and left to ring out" gives you an effect, where asking for a piano sound gives you somebody playing.
Why does my choked cymbal still ring?
The stop was not in the prompt. Ask for it stopped immediately by a hand with no ring at all, since a cymbal rings by default and only an explicit instruction removes it.
What does the needle drop actually do for a scene?
It sets a period and a mood in about two seconds, and the surface crackle afterwards gives you a bed you can leave running under dialogue without it reading as music.
Can I use these in a commercial project?
Yes. Audio generated on a paid Morphic plan is cleared for commercial use, including film, games, and advertising.
