How is this different from a normal explosion?
Scale and structure. A conventional explosion is one event with debris after it. This is four events spread over fifteen or twenty seconds, and the gaps between them are what make the audience read it as enormous.
How long should the gap between the crack and the shockwave be?
Long enough to feel wrong. Two or three seconds reads as close, five or more reads as miles away. The delay is the only cue an audience has for distance at that scale.
Why does my blast sound small?
It has an attack. Enormous events do not start sharply at a distance, so a long roll that builds with no attack at the front reads as vast, where a hard front edge reads as something nearby and ordinary.
What do most edits get wrong?
They stop at the bang. The wind drawing back inward afterwards, and the dead air that follows it, do more for the aftermath than the detonation itself, and both are usually missing.
Should I use the distant version instead?
Often, yes. A vast dull roll with no crack at all keeps a scene about the people watching, where the close version makes the scene about the event.
