FAQs

How do I draw a bat wing?
A bat wing is a hand. Four very long finger bones fan out through the membrane and the skin stretches between them, which is why the trailing edge is scalloped. Ask for visible finger bones fanning through the wing and the shape stops looking like a cape.
How do I draw a group of bats so they look natural?
Give each bat a different point in the wing beat and vary the size so some read as nearer. Avoid an even grid: cluster three or four together and let the rest trail off, which is how a real flock spreads.
How do I get clean bat silhouettes for cutouts?
Ask for solid black shapes with no interior detail and a plain white background. Keep the wing tips and ears bold rather than fine, so they survive being cut out. Crop on the Canvas and download in HD for printing.
How do I draw a bat hanging upside down?
The feet hook over the perch and the whole body hangs straight below, with the wings folded in against the chest like a closed cloak. Ask for the head tucked slightly forward and the thumbs visible at the wing fold.
How do I draw a cute bat instead of a scary one?
Enlarge the head and the ears, round off the wing points, set the eyes wide and low, and keep the mouth small and closed. A thick even outline and flat colour fill finishes the friendly look.
Can I keep a whole set of bat drawings in one style?
Use Style Transfer. Lock the look of your first bat, then apply it while you generate the rest of the flock so the line weight, wing treatment and palette stay consistent across every piece.
