FAQs

How do I draw a flock of birds without drawing each one?
Ask for the birds nearest the viewer to be drawn with a real wing shape and everything further back to become simple tapering marks that shrink and fade. The eye fills in the rest, and the flock reads as depth rather than repetition.
How do I draw birds in flight?
Vary the wing position across the group. Some fully open, some on the downstroke, some almost closed. A flock where every bird holds the same pose looks stamped, and changing the phase fixes it instantly.
How do I draw feathers without drawing every one?
Group them into three bands, the small covert feathers near the body, the longer secondaries, and the long primaries at the wing tip. Detail one or two at the edge of each band and let the rest stay as tone.
What is the easiest bird to draw?
A small perching bird. The body is one egg shape, the head a smaller circle overlapping it, and the tail a simple wedge. Once those three shapes are placed, the beak and eye finish it.
How do I make a study sheet of several bird species?
Ask for all the birds at the same scale, in side view, in a grid, with a plain background and a blank label space under each one. Keeping the scale and the view fixed is what makes a set look like a plate.
Can I keep several bird drawings in one style?
Use Style Transfer. Lock the first drawing, then generate each species through it so the line weight, feather treatment and paper match across the whole sheet.
