How do I draw a black cat without it turning into a flat blob?
Do not draw the coat at true black. Push the whole body to a dark mid grey, then reserve the deepest value for the shadow under the chin, inside the ears and beneath the body. That small reserved area is what makes the rest read as a lit, rounded form.
Where does the light go on black fur?
Black fur mostly shows reflected light rather than direct highlight, so it runs as a soft band along the top of the spine, the outer haunch and the ridge of the skull. Keep those bands narrow and slightly cool, and never let them turn white except on individual guard hairs.
How do I draw the eyes on a black cat?
The eyes carry the whole drawing, so treat them as the highest contrast area. Use a green, gold or amber iris against the dark coat, keep the pupil a clean vertical slit in bright light and a wide oval in dim light, and place one small highlight on the same side as the key light.
How do I draw black cat fur texture?
Work the edges rather than the interior. Break the silhouette into short hair strokes at the chest ruff, the ear tufts and the tail tip, and leave the body surface mostly smooth. Texturing the middle of a dark mass just muddies it.
