FAQs

How do I draw a coffin step by step?
Draw the lid as a flat six-sided shape first, then drop a side panel down from the near edges to give it depth. Tilting it to three-quarters so you see the lid and one side at once is what stops it reading as a flat outline.
What is the correct coffin shape?
The traditional shape has six sides: it widens at the shoulders then tapers to the foot. A casket is the simpler rectangular box with four sides. Say which one you want, because the two read quite differently.
How do I draw a cartoon coffin for a seasonal scene?
Ask for an even outline seen flat from the front with a plain lid seam, no hardware, no shading and flat white behind it. It cuts out cleanly on the Canvas for a card, a party sheet or a banner.
How do I draw the wood grain and panels?
Keep the grain running the long way down the box and add a single recessed panel line a short distance in from each edge. A few dark grain lines are enough; an even pattern across the whole side flattens it.
How do I draw an open lid without losing the shape?
Ask for the lid propped at an angle with its underside visible, and the interior kept much darker than the outside. The contrast between the lit outer panel and the dark inside is what gives the opening depth.
Which medium suits a coffin drawing best?
Graphite handles the box form and the panels, stipple gives control over iron hardware, charcoal suits a dark vault scene, and a flat outline or a solid silhouette is best for a seasonal prop or a layout.
