FAQs

How do I draw a dove in flight?
Pick one moment rather than an average of several. Wings raised at the top of the upstroke gives the cleanest silhouette, wings swept back mid-glide gives the most speed. Say which one you want, and add that the tail is fanned, and the pose stops looking stiff.
How do I draw dove feathers without drawing every one?
Model the long flight feathers individually along the wing edge and keep the body as soft blended tone with a few suggested edges. That is how bird illustrators handle it, and stating it prevents an even scaled texture over the whole bird.
What is the difference between drawing a dove and a pigeon?
They are close relatives, so the difference is mostly proportion. A dove reads slimmer, with a smaller rounded head, a longer tapering tail and a narrower body. Ask for a slender neck and a long tail and the bird reads as a dove.
How do I draw a simple dove outline for a card or a logo?
Ask for one continuous even stroke, no interior detail, no shading and a plain white background. Then crop it on the Canvas so the silhouette sits clean enough to place into a card, a programme or a layout.
Can I make a white dove read clearly on a dark background?
Yes, and chalk on toned paper is the easiest way. Ask for a bright lit edge along the top of each wing and a deep shadowed underside, so the bird is defined by light rather than by an outline.
Can I keep a set of bird drawings in one style?
Use Style Transfer. Lock the look of your first dove, then apply it while you generate other birds so the line weight, feather treatment and palette stay consistent across the whole set.
