How do I draw an explosion easily?
Use the comic burst. It is one jagged outline with spikes of uneven length and a smaller burst inside it, which takes a minute and needs no shading. Uneven spike lengths are the only rule that matters for it to look right.
Why does my explosion look like a flat star?
Because the spikes are too regular. Ask for varied lengths and angles, with two or three long ones and the rest short. Adding a second, smaller burst inside the first also breaks the symmetry immediately.
How do I draw a realistic fireball?
Build it in lobes like a cloud, not as a sphere. Ask for light from inside, dark on the underside of each lobe, and the whole mass wider at the top than the base because it is rolling upward as it rises.
How do I draw the debris and smoke?
Fragments should vary in size and travel on arcs, not straight lines, with a few very close to the viewer. Keep the smoke soft edged so the debris stays the only sharp thing in the frame.
How do I make an explosion graphic for a layout?
Ask for flat vector shapes in two colours on a plain white background, then crop it tight on the Canvas. Nested burst outlines survive being scaled down better than a shaded drawing does.
Which medium suits an explosion drawing best?
